#220-8010 Saba Road, Richmond BC

This show promises to be an unusual blend of contemporary musical theatre, with a nod to Cinderella’s Asian origins. While researching the play, the creative team was surprised to discover that the familiar fairytale they had assumed was Western European appeared over a thousand years ago in China’s Tang Dynasty as Ye Xian, the story of a downtrodden girl who confides in a magical goldfish instead of her fairy godmother. Western audiences are perhaps most familiar with Disney’s 1950 animated classic. But the adaptations and variations of this rags-to-riches story have been retold throughout the ages in places including Ancient Greece, Vietnam, Korea, France, and Germany. The story has also been told in the Arabian One Thousand and One Nights, in oral traditions, onstage, in ballet, in musical theatre, and on film and TV.

This version was created as a star vehicle for Julie Andrews in 1957 and broadcast to the largest television audience (100 million viewers) of the era. The Children’s Theatre of Richmond production will feature Rogers and Hammerstein’s poignant, memorable melodies but will also reflect the story of Ye Xian through design elements: fabric, colour, and symbol. Audiences familiar with asian culture will recognize these references to the heroine who won the heart of a prince with her charming personality and unique beauty.
