Charlie Brown visits Lucy's psychiatric booth and – for five cents – tells her his troubles. After listing a multitude of potential conditions, Lucy diagnoses Charlie Brown with pantaphobia: the fear of everything. Realizing Charlie Brown needs involvement, Lucy enlists him to direct the Christmas play. The classic animated television special A Charlie Brown Christmas comes to life in this faithful stage adaptation in which Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the Peanuts gang discover the true meaning of Christmas.
As we reflect on the recent holiday season, we can enjoy memories of quality time spent with family and celebration in many forms. For some of us, however, those memories may also include “feeling sort of let down”. This is where we find Charlie Brown: surrounded by Christmas cheer and celebration, but struggling to find purpose and enjoyment.
Throughout this short but meaningful piece, Charlie Brown and friends search for the true meaning of Christmas. Through connection, involvement, and friendship, the group learns that the spirit of the holiday season was with them all along.
Working with this group of young actors has been such a treat. For many of them, this is their first time performing on stage in front of an audience! I am beyond proud of the work they have put in, and I am so grateful for the involvement and purpose that they have given me. I would also like to say a big thank you to the wonderful CTORA producers for their support and to my assistant, Jordin, who was an integral part of the creative process and an excellent role model to these young artists.
Though this story revolves around Christmas, the message is timeless. Thank you all so much for coming, and I hope you can all take a bit of holiday magic home with you. Enjoy the show!
