The Lightning Thief is based on the best selling novels by Rick Riordan, that started out as bedtime stories about the Greek Gods, for the author’s son, Haley. Riordan, a former middle school teacher, created new characters based on Greek mythology and his son, who’d been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. After he finished telling the story of Percy Jackson’s quest to return Zeus’ lightning bolt, Riordan turned the tale into the first Percy Jackson book. A big screen adaptation and a sequel followed. With trailers for a new upcoming series due out next year, Percy Jackson’s story continues.
This stage musical, complete with a live 5 piece orchestra, mixes genres from rock and roll to Mumford. It is being presented with a cast of 9 playing over 50 characters. It has the same charm, comedy and epic adventure complete with monsters, that made the books so popular. I was particularly interested in this show due to the complex technical aspects; incorporating puppets, rock show lighting with simple staging and minimal set pieces. It allows audience members to use their imagination to help create the world we live in, not unlike reading the novels.
I have assembled such a talented cast, backed by an incredible production team; whom I have worked with for many years. I cannot wait to share this incredible musical with Vancouver audiences. – From the Director, Mark Carter
